A name, a phone number and a QR code on the sleep screen, so a reader left on a train can find its way back.
How to set it on the reader
- CrossPoint 1.6+: copy sleep-overlay.png to the root of the SD card, then Settings → Display → Sleep Screen Transparent.
- CrossInk: rename it sleep.png in the root, then Sleep Screen → Page Overlay.
- A sleep-overlay.png in the root wins over a .sleep-overlay folder, so the card shows every time.
- Stock Licorice (X4 Pro, X4 Classic): set the PNG as a custom wallpaper (USB Mode → wallpaper folder → All Files → Wallpapers → hold → Set as Wallpaper). Per Xteink's release notes it is drawn over the book page when you power off while reading.

What it does to the file
Everything below can be checked against the file you get back.
- Text is never dithered
- Letters are drawn directly in the panel's grays, because a dithered phone number is hard to read. Pictures behind it are dithered as usual.
- The QR carries a way to reach you
- A mailto: with the subject filled in, a tel: number, or any URL. It is encoded here and drawn as blocks, so a phone camera reads it off the e-ink screen.
- Full screen or an overlay
- The full version is a whole sleep screen. The overlay version is a transparent PNG drawn over the page you were reading, which needs CrossPoint 1.6+, CrossInk or Licorice.
- Nothing is uploaded
- Your phone number goes into the image in the tab, not to a server.
Put it on the device
- 1
Pick the version that fits the firmware
A BMP for any firmware, the transparent card for Transparent / Page Overlay modes.
- 2
Copy it like any sleep screen
sleep.bmp in the card root, or the overlay in .sleep-overlay, depending on what you chose.
- 3
Test the QR with a phone
Point a camera at the reader's screen before it leaves the house. Dithering is not used on the code, but a dirty screen can still blur it.
Where the file goes
| Firmware | Card over page | Full screen |
|---|---|---|
| CrossPoint 1.6+ | sleep-overlay.png in the root, Sleep Screen → Transparent | sleep.bmp in the root, Sleep Screen → Custom |
| CrossInk | Rename to sleep.png, Sleep Screen → Page Overlay | sleep.bmp, Custom (the .sleep folder wins if it has images) |
| Stock Licorice (X4 Pro, X4 Classic) | Set the PNG as your custom wallpaper; it is drawn over the book page | Set as your custom wallpaper |
| Older stock (X4, X3) | Not supported | Set as the custom power-off screen |
For a picture with your own caption instead, use the CrossPoint sleep screen maker.

Questions
›Which style should I use?
On CrossPoint 1.6+ or CrossInk, the card over the page keeps your book on screen and adds the contact, so you lose nothing. On stock firmware, or if you'd rather have a plain screen, use the full-screen BMP.
›Can I keep my wallpapers and still show the contact?
On CrossPoint, yes: keep your wallpapers in the .sleep folder for Custom, or use the overlay with Transparent mode, which draws the card over your page. A root sleep.bmp always wins over the .sleep folder on CrossPoint, so a full-screen lost-and-found BMP there shows every time.
›What does the QR code do?
Email opens a new mail to you with the subject "I found your e-reader". Call starts a call to your number. Link opens any page you choose, such as a contact page. The finder only needs a phone camera.
›Is my contact sent anywhere?
No. The screen is drawn in your browser and the file is saved straight to your computer. Keep in mind that whoever finds the reader sees what you put on it.
›Does it work on stock Xteink firmware?
The full-screen BMP does: set it as the custom power-off screen or wallpaper. The see-through card needs CrossPoint 1.6 or newer, CrossInk, or Licorice, Xteink's new stock firmware for the X4 Pro and X4 Classic, which draws a transparent custom wallpaper over the book page.
›Does it work on the X3?
Yes. Pick X3 and the screen is drawn at 528×792; the X4 and X4 Pro are 480×800.
›Is it free?
Yes, with no sign-up and no watermark.
